All students in Years 8 and 9 are exposed to the Essential Learnings. The Essential Learnings describe the knowledge, understanding and ways of working that students need for ongoing learning, social and personal competence and participation in a democratic society.

The current Junior outline is as follows:

In Year 10 (the start of Senior) students have the choice of Sea Science, Moving Science, Reacting Science, Living Science and/or Working Science. These subjects are based around the Year 11 and 12 subjects Marine Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement and Certificate II in Rural Operations (respectively).

Year 11 and 12 Board Subjects Marine Studies, Chemistry, Physics and Biology are all delivered to a high standard, going above and beyond the requirements set out by the Queensland Studies Authority, whilst the Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement and Certificate II in Rural Operations have been designed to give students the skills and abilities to be able to work in these respective fields.

Innisfail SHS has now started to offer students the opportunity to undertake university based study whilst still in Year 12.  These are offered through the Get Set for JCU program, and the Bright Minds Enrichment Studies program through UQ.
